Card from an original felting by Cornish artist, Rowena
This is a card of an original felting inspired by the first swallow sighted this year in April with my son We were walking in Zennor, Cornwall. It is also inspired by the poem by Sara Teasdale ‘There will come soft rains’ – see below. A line from the poem is printed on the back of the card.
The original was created firstly with wet-felted base layers and then further layers of needle-felting and fibres were added for depth and texture. Finally, I embellished with stitching and beading.
The poem is printed on the back of the card
‘There Will Come Soft Rains’
by Sara Teasdale, 1920
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;
And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,
Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;
And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.
Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;
And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.
